19 May 2025

Today (Monday 19 May 2025) marks the start of UK Airports Health and Safety Week, a week-long celebration of everything being done to ensure a healthy and safe environment for passengers, staff, and communities in and around airports.

This year, AirportsUK is particularly grateful for the support of AIRDAT, the airport systems, training and consultancy services provider, and the UK Civil Aviation Authority, the sector regulator.

This year, the three key themes for the week are:

  1. Ground movements – reducing risks associated with ground handling, aircraft movements and vehicle operations;
  2. Slips, trips and falls in passenger areas – raising awareness of hazards across terminals, walkways, escalators, aprons and boarding bridges;
  3. Reducing stress – improving wellbeing and mental health of passengers and staff by reducing travel and workplace stress.

Airports across the UK will be putting on a whole series of events, from training sessions to airfield tours, from safety demonstrations to talks on key topics, so check out your local sites for the latest.

Commenting on the week, AirportsUK’s chief executive, Karen Dee, said:

“Health and safety week is always a highlight of the year, with airports showing what they do every day to make sure air travel is safe for everyone involved.

“This year’s focus covers all parts of airports’ operations, from the behind the scenes work to support aircraft, safety in passenger areas, and reducing stress in what can often be a pressured environment.

“From the whole team at AirportsUK, good luck to everyone involved and we look forward to seeing some of the events taking place as the week goes on.”

Also commenting, Jon Round, the head of airspace, air traffic management and aerodromes at the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said:

“Safety is aviation’s top priority and we work extremely hard with all parts of the sector to ensure best practice is shared, processes are up to date, and staff are trained appropriately.

 “We at the regulator are delighted to partner with AirportsUK on this industry-leading event to showcase all the hard work airports do year-round.

 “It will be great to see just what innovative and inspiring activities are held to demonstrate that UK aviation is the world’s leader in safety.”

In addition to this week’s activities, there will also be an awards ceremony on 2 October, where airports’ most innovative and impactful events and activities will be presented and celebrated.

We look forward to following events this week, and to receiving awards entries in due course. Please check back on the AirportsUK social media feeds for more coverage across the week.
