AirportsUK chief executive, Karen Dee, has been interviewed as part of ‘Advancing Aviation, produced by ITN Business.
On the importance of airports for the UK economy as a whole, Dee said:
“As an island nation, you can imagine that all of our businesses’, their exports, their imports, are facilitated by aviation. We’re bringing people together with their friends and family and taking people away on holiday.”
Dee went on to say that:
“We generate about £2bn per week in gross value added and support about a million jobs, so a really important role for the UK economy as a whole.”
Responding to the question of how airports are helping deliver a more sustainable future, Dee also highlighted some of the positive moves being made by the sector:
“As airports we are fully committed to achieving net zero by 2050 and in fact UK aviation was one of the first sectors in the world to set out that commitment and a clear road-map on how it was going to do that.”
And finally, looking at how innovation is supporting improvements to the passenger experience, Dee said:
“We are seeing all kinds of innovations like improvements to security arrangements that will ensure in the future we can smoothly pass through while keeping liquids and electronics in our bags.”
