Today (Thursday 05 December 2024) chief executives from Birmingham, Edinburgh and Gatwick Airports agreed that the outlook is positive for the year ahead, with opportunities for growth in our connectivity.
The panel agreed that there were challenges, however, including around costs and burdens that airports are facing. It was suggested that government should think twice before viewing aviation as an easy target for tax rises, given the role it plays in economic growth.
Commenting on the panel, Karen Dee, chief executive of AirportsUK, said:
“It was fascinating to hear from chief executives of three of our largest airports on the landscape they are anticipating for the next year.
“The potential for growth, from the pent-up demand that exists that will help generate more connectivity with the world, should be welcomed.
“We need to ensure that these messages get through to government and that ministers enable the sector to do what it does best – generate economic growth through connectivity.
“These challenges aside, it is great that there is such a positive outlook for airports, as long as they can continue to operate in a stable, sustainable and affordable framework.”
